BCCAN has been working on a local response to a global challenge since 2007.

We always keep in mind how we can best integrate climate adaptation and mitigation strategies when addressing local environmental issues.

Our Objectives

To achieve our mission of a more sustainable Bathurst, we have broken it down into identified key objectives:

Listening to, learning from, and advocating for the wisdom of the ancient living culture of Wiradyuri people in caring for Country

Working collaboratively with other organisations and groups that share our values and/or who have jurisdictional responsibilities to the local environment

Building community awareness about the climate crisis and what we can do as individuals and together to respond and adapt

Supporting a just transition in the local adoption of renewable energy technologies, where such technology is appropriate

Advocating for the protection of water through increased landscape hydration, riparian zone repair, regenerative agriculture, and water storage including:

- The installation of rainwater tanks in 70% of all buildings by 2035
- Increased use of recycled water tanks for irrigation purposes by 60%, by 2030
- Using the ground water tunnel at Gormans Hill
- Reducing plastic pollution in waterways
- Utilising natural sequence methods to slow, sink, and spread water in the landscape

Contributing to a local culture that values trees for their shade, habitat, water retention, carbon sequestration, and beauty; that sees fewer trees destroyed and more trees planted in both rural and urban spaces

Appreciating and rebuilding local biodiversity and habitat to build resilience in a changing environment

Supporting initiatives building resilience in our community through regenerative, distributive, and ethical business practices -- especially enhancing food security

Advocating for cleaner and healthier transport infrastructure such as footpaths, cycleways, and transition to urban electric buses
